Birthday | Labor Day

Friday I grew another year older. My husband started my day by having me open gifts. (Not a bad way to start the last day of the work week!) Seriously, he is the best gift-giver. I never have to worry about unwrapping a power tool or piece of exercise equipment. He gave me some Russian nesting doll measuring cups; adorable mustache chip clips; a Forever 21 gift card; a set of Hello Kitty makeup brushes; and a set of Sephora + Pantone Universe makeup brushes.

While I was working away at the office on Friday, he came to visit with Jones Bros. cupcakes and an Americano in-hand! It was such a nice surprise to have him at work.

I also felt so blessed (literally) because after Mass on Friday, the priest gave me a special birthday blessing. It really gave me a sense of peace and I truly don't think there is a better gift on this earth than the blessings we receive from God.

Friday night we went to Kobe steakhouse with our friends Ryan and Mel. At Kobe, a Japanese steakhouse, they cook your food right on the table. It was delicious and entertaining. Afterward, Scott and I strolled around the Old Market, a very cool, eclectic area of our city. We finished the night with ice cream from our favorite shop.

Saturday we headed to my parents' house for my hometown's big Fall Festival/Labor Day weekend. We were able to catch the annual variety musical show at the high school Saturday night and it was nice to see some old, familiar faces.

Sunday my brother and his friend, Kendra along with my sister and her boyfriend Luke, took the family dog to the river for some shenanigans.

We ended the day with supper at my grandparents' house.

This morning--Labor Day--our town has a huge parade. I love it. All the businesses take it so seriously and I've yet to attend a parade with floats that rival ours'. I was also thrilled that two of my girlfriends were able to bring their little girls and sit with us.

My sister and her boyfriend, Luke, were characters on a local business's float. She was dressed as a trapeze artist and he as a ringmaster. The float had a circus theme and was adorable. After the parade we had lunch with the family and then Scott and I headed home.

The weekend was great. It was so nice to see my family, which was the best gift I could have asked for.

I hope you had a great Labor Day weekend and wish you a great (short!) work week.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Romans 15:13

God Bless America

I hope you all had a good Independence Day. We did the most 'Merican things we could think of--hit the gym, went to the mall, took naps, drank by the pool and grilled meat.

Yes, that's my husband and his best friend being "patriotic." Perhaps I should send their photo to Michelob. I think this would be a great shot for a new ad campaign. Or not.

I don't know about you, but today feels like a Sunday. I pray tomorrow doesn't go the route of a Manic Monday. But, hey, on a more positive note, the weekend's only two days away.

Again, happy firecracker day--hope you had fun blowing stuff up, but didn't blow anything off.

God Bless America,
Land that I love. Stand beside her, and guide her Thru the night with a light from above. From the mountains, to the prairies, To the oceans, white with foam God bless America, My home sweet home.

Three Cheers for Green Beer

We had friends over for St. Patrick's Day this past weekend. Green beer was made, and consumed.

It was a nice, small get-together. Scott and I really enjoy entertaining and it's always nice to catch up with friends.

Here are a few pics from our shindig. Oh, and the first pic...I'm not sure what Scott is thinking!

Simple Valentine's Day Wreath

This tutorial is for a simple Valentine's Day Wreath. Personally, I enjoy Valentine's Day, but I find some of the wreaths and decorations out there to be a bit cheesy. I like this wreath because it's simple and makes a great transition between my winter/Christmas decor and The Day of Love. (Sorry if that made you gag a bit)

Simple Valentine's Day Wreath

Supplies Needed:
-Scissors
-Wire cutters (optional)
-Four to five bushes of greenery (I got mine at the Dollar Tree...holla!)
-Heart wreath form
-Ribbon
-Wire

Start out by taking the individual stems of greenery off the bush. This is where wire cutters may be handy. But I'm a glutton for punishment and use the bendy-twisty-handy method. Yes, that's the scientific term.

Next, begin grouping three or four stems together and wiring around the form. You'll do this step until your wreath is full. I filled in a few bare spots afterward with leftover stems.

And naturally, Dart had to come lay on my workspace in the middle of the project. You can omit this step. Or not, if you have a curious cat.

Finally, attach your ribbon. I used a piece of wire. Now you can hang your beautiful Valentine's Day wreath, crack open some wine and turn on the Barry White. Or you can do what I did--make a coffee, relax in your pajama pants and admire your handiwork.

Happy New Year

The New Year 2012 started off fabulously. We went out with our friends, Ryan and Mel, to Cheesecake Factory for drinks and dinner.

Weather here in Nebraska has been so crazy. It wasn't really cold and by the time we came out of the restaurant, it was raining. Typically we've got fa-reezing weather.

Afterward, we headed to a bowling alley where we had booked a New Year's Eve party package. We met another couple who are friend of ours, Ted and Andye. We bowled, had drinks and event took advantage of some go-karting. Except for me. I was the team photographer. Quick fact: I'm terrified of go-karts!

We had such a blast and Ryan even won a Nintendo Wii! We were back home by 1:30 a.m. and ready for bed.

On New Year's Day, I was ultra-productive. Cleaning, organizing...you name it, I did it. I love the New Year. It gives me a feeling of fresh starts, new possibilities and a renewal of my spirit.

And resolutions? I don't typically make resolutions, although I did tell Scott I resolved to vacuum more, after dusting my house yesterday. I feel like I'm always dusting! Does anyone else feel like this?

Today I started the day with some shopping and then came home, had lunch and spent some time with Scott. I started feeling a bit head-coldy so I made a big pot of chicken noodles for supper. I'm ending the day with The Bachelor, a manicure and pedicure, some laundry and a little Pinterest. Oh, and I'm doing my first night of a burpee challenge!

Tomorrow it's back to work. Thank goodness for short weeks and fresh starts.

Greeting Cards Have All Been Sent

One aspect of Christmas I always enjoy post-December 25 is looking at all the Christmas cards we received in the weeks leading up to the holiday. You'll note the title of this post is a shout-out to Merry Christmas Darling by the Carpenters. This year, we sent out standard, boxed Christmas Cards.

In years past, we've created our own. (One of the perks to being married to a graphic designer, I suppose). This little beauty is from 2009:

Do you send out Christmas cards? Are you a Christmas letter writer? Boxed or customized?

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas from our family to yours.

An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger." Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests." Luke 2:9-14

A nod to my heritage

I don't know how I forgot this photo in the Holiday Home Tour post. The vase I put this poinsettia arrangement in is one of my favorite pieces. I purchased it a few months ago because I loved the white, milky glass and its unique shape. When I got the vase home, I unwrapped it and noticed it had a tiny sticker on it that said "Made in Poland." I was thrilled. My grandmother is Polish and our family has always been good about keeping that heritage alive. So, this Christmas, the white Polish vase takes center stage on our dining room table. It's a little nod to my heritage. Wesolych Swiat Bozego Narodzenia!

White elephants in the room

Today was my company's annual Christmas lunch. It's held at a local country club and we're served a nice meal, Christmas music plays, people laugh and of course, exchange gifts.

We start with a "normal" gift exchange with unisex gifts like gift cards, bottles of wine, etc. When we're through, everyone participates in a "White Elephant" exchange. The things people bring never cease to amaze me. I ended up going home with two Star Wars coffee table books. The husband was pretty happy about them.

Afterward, two other PR girls and myself jetted quickly to Starbucks for some afternoon fuel. I ordered an Americano and it was perfection!

On Tuesdays, Scott, who works from home, commutes to his company's physical office, which means getting up at 4 a.m. I could sleep in, but come on, it's so hard to get up and motivated when you have a person still sleeping soundly in bed. I really feel for him. So, I get up when he gets up. It actually allows me to get a few things checked off my to-do list before I even head out the door. The commute also means he gets home late.

Tonight I made a homemade Bolognese sauce with spinach fettuccini. I'll post the recipe for the sauce on Simple. Chic. Savory soon. It was phenomenal!

My bed is calling my name, now, so I'm signing off. Tomorrow is Wednesday--mid-week!

Healthy holiday balance

You should never feel like food is the enemy, especially during the holidays. However, many of us feel surrounded by food during this time of year, which can throw off our normal habits. I’ve been working with a nutritionist/registered dietitian the past few months to help me develop a better relationship with food and a healthier way of eating. Before Thanksgiving, she gave me some excellent advice. Number one is to practice, as always, intuitive eating—eating only when hungry and only until you’re just satisfied. If you continue to practice this through the holidays, you won’t overdo it. Also, if you really want to enjoy something higher in calories, don’t restrict yourself. But if you’re faced with a buffet of foods, rate the foods on a scale from one to ten with the ones being foods you really don’t like and tens being foods that perhaps you absolutely love and rarely eat. For example, a slice of your grandma’s homemade cherry pie that she only makes for special occasions. If you want to splurge, only do so on nines and tens. Food isn’t the enemy and you don’t want to feel restricted. Enjoy a sensible portion and stop when your body tells you it’s full.

The following tips are from eatright.org, the website for the American Dietetic Association. They’re great reminders and helpful hints.

Health Tips for Holiday Eating

Courtesy of eatright.org

The holidays are here, and even though they come with enough cookies, candy and comfort foods to last a lifetime, don't run screaming from the buffet table just yet. Food may be a centerpiece of holiday festivities, but the holiday season doesn’t mean you have to pack on the party pounds. Try these tips for making your holidays healthful:

Take the edge off your hunger before a party. Feeling hungry can sabotage even the strongest willpower, so eat a small, low-fat snack such as fruit or low-fat cheese before you head out the door. This will help you avoid rushing to the buffet table when you arrive.

Make just one trip to the party buffet. Choose only the foods you really want to eat and keep portions small. Often just a taste satisfies a food craving or curiosity. Also, move your socializing away from the buffet table to eliminate unconscious nibbling.

Meet and greet. Conversation is calorie-free. Get a beverage (try sparkling water and a lime twist rather than alcohol) and settle into the festivities by catching up with old friends and making new ones.

Choose lower-calorie party foods. Go easy on fried appetizers and cheese cubes. Instead, have some raw vegetables with a small amount of dip—just enough to coat the end of the vegetable— or try boiled shrimp or scallops with cocktail sauce or lemon. To help ensure there will be healthful treats, bring a dish to the party filled with raw vegetables with a yogurt or cottage cheese dip, or bring a platter of fresh fruit.

If you are at a sit-down dinner party, cut your first helping in half. That way, you can enjoy seconds (and your host or hostess will feel good about that) and the total amount of food you eat will be about the same as a normal-size portion.

Enjoy physical activity after a holiday feast. Find activities the whole family can do such as walking, biking, roller-blading or hockey, and develop family fun-time habits that can continue after the holiday season.

Be realistic. Don't try to lose weight during the holidays—this may be a self-defeating goal. Instead, strive to maintain your weight by balancing party eating with other meals. Eat small, lower-calorie meals during the day so you can enjoy celebration foods later without overdoing your total calorie intake.

Have fun. Enjoy traditional holiday meals and party foods with family and friends while maintaining a healthy lifestyle, too.

With a little practice and mindful eating, you and I can make it through the holidays without feeling any pressure, stress or guilt surrounding food. I plan to tell myself that the things I want to remember most about this Christmas and holiday season are people and memories. Enjoy, relax and Merry Christmas!

'Twas Casino Night Before Christmas

Friday was our company Christmas Party. The theme was "'Twas Casino Night Before Christmas." The Millers had a fabulous time, shown here via photo evidence:

The party was fantastic--appetizers, drinks, meal, blackjack, dancing, photo booth (obviously), and a raffle. We won a crisp $50. Which I may need, after falling on my way to the car--soberly--after tripping on a huge landscaping rock. It was dark! I really marred up a pair of my favorite shoes. A sacrifice to the party Gods, I guess.

On our way back home (my company put us all up in a hotel for the night) Saturday morning, we had breakfast and coffee; did a little shopping; and stopped at the Brass Armadillo, a huge antique mall. There was so much to look at. I ended up coming home with a white ceramic horse statue, a vintage painting, an old Polish cigar flag and Scott bought a vintage martial arts movie poster for his friend.

It was a great way to kick-off the last weekend before Christmas. And now it's Monday and CHRISTMAS WEEK! I'm looking forward to the week and hope yours is "merry and bright," too.

Lake Day and Labor Day

Labor Day weekend, for me, means heading to my hometown in central Nebraska to celebrate their big Fall Festival. Saturday, we made the four-hour trip to my parents' house, where we arrived in the evening. Talking, joking, wine and beer drinking and getting my folks' dog, Deuce, all wound up were the only items on our itinerary.

Posing with Deuce and sporting our Big Red pride!

Sunday, we headed to the lake with our good friends, Ryan and Melanie. Mel's family own an adorable place at the lake and they were gracious enough to invite us for the day.

Driving out to the lake made me smile. I love being back home. I love the way drivers greet passing drivers with the one finger wave. No, not the same one finger wave people give each other in the city. It's a brief, pointer-finger-coming-off-the-steering-wheel-acknowledgment-type wave. And I love it. The scenery was beautiful also. Wildflowers lining the roadsides, cows grazing and winding rivers and creeks in the valley.

We took jet skis, a wake board and tubes. The sand and scenery were amazing and I haven't felt so relaxed in what feels like years. The guys had a blast in the water (and we joined too occasionally) but spent most of the time laying on the beach sipping on drinks.

We headed back for a cream can supper at the lake house. Unfortunately, with a little too much sun, not enough water and some wine thrown in, I ended up sick and miserable at the end of the night. I've never experienced being sick from wine before and I can almost positively assure you that it won't happen again. Enough said.

The next day, Labor Day, is my hometown's big parade. Thanks to my father for going out to get me a Gatorade, I was finally feeling hydrated enough to feel alive again and enjoyed the festivities.

We headed home that evening, stopping for supper half-way at a diner-style restaurant. The weekend was a great finale to our summer.
